Hopewood Park, Ryhope

An integrated art scheme for a brand new £50 million mental health hospital development at Ryhope, Sunderland. The 137 bed hospital houses urgent care assessment and treatment, older people’s functional mental illness, rehabilitation and psychiatric intensive care. The artworks reference the nearby Victorian water pumping station and Ryhope colliery, as well as the local scenery of Ryhope Dene and the Tunstall Hills. A specially written poem provided the starting point for many bespoke patterns which are laser engraved into oak cladding, etched into tiles, silkcreen-printed on to glass panels and inlaid into decorative paving.
